The Path Forward for Science under a New Administration

As President-elect Joseph Biden fills key positions to address global challenges from COVID-19 to climate change, the scientific community is optimistic he will prioritize research and development. The Optical Society requests that President-elect Biden continue to expand government support for these key industries made possible by optics and photonics, the science of light.

2020 OSA Laser Congress Highlights Future Technologies and Applications

The all-virtual 2020 OSA Laser Congress, held 13 – 16 October, featured presentations on innovations in solid-state lasers and applications including the use of optics technologies in space. Speakers described how spaceborne LIDAR is measuring greenhouse gases, agricultural output, deforestation in the Amazon, carbon content in biosphere, and phytoplankton in the oceans.
