Light has long been a muse and a medium for artists around the world, inspiring artworks that leverage and examine the ability of light to create beauty—and provide a new perspective on the world around us. The July/August cover story of Optica's magazine Optics & Photonics News (OPN), in a biennial feature, highglights eight artists who incorporate stunning light effects and optical principles in their work, from mirrored rooms filled with seemingly infinite LED orbs to an observatory in an extinct volano that frames the sun and stars.

The motivations behind these artworks are as varied as their forms. Perhaps most ambitious of all are the aims articulated by Yayoi Kusama, the artist whose work is featured on the magazine's cover—and who says her 75-year career has followed a calling to "fight for love and understanding in the mystery of human life."
