Each year, the December issue of Optica's Optics & Photonics News highlights 30 of the most exciting recent research stories in optics and photonics, selected by a panel of guest editors for their particular value and interest to the optics community. This year's summaries offer a look at innovative new work in areas from quantum topology to real-time optoacoustic imaging of embryonic heart development to Airy beams for wireless THz communications to drone-based precision deflection measurement.

OPN also asked seven of the scientists whose research was included in the issue to take a look ahead and give their thoughts on areas that might advance in the coming years. In another special December feature, the magazine's annual photo contest highlights impressive and beautiful images with optical themes submitted by members.

In a new study published in Optics Letters, researchers show how dynamic tracking could help reduce noise in a gravitational-wave detector. The advance could one day allow scientists to see farther into the universe and provide more information about how black holes and neutron stars behave as they merge.

Congratulations to Michael Fleischhauer, Rheinland-Pfälzische Technische Universität (RPTU) Kaiserslautern-Landau, German, the 2025 Herbert Walther Award winner. He is honored for key contributions in nonlinear quantum optics as well as photonic and atomic quantum technologies—in particular for the development of a toolbox to coherently control multi-level atoms with light, including the concept of dark state polaritons and Rydberg dipole blockade physics.

Vladimir Aksyuk is particularly interested in developing a comprehensive understanding of whatever he's working on, no matter the topic. He always wants to fully understand why a particular result occurs or why a solution works. Going back and forth between making a new measurement and figuring out the "why" eventually leads to a robust and complete understanding that can be applied to other research areas.
