As the world increasingly relies on mobile and digital technologies, the need for data is rising dramatically—global internet usage rose almost 30% per year between 2017 and 2021. To meet this surging demand, network operators are accelerating plans to add capacity to their infrastructure, including the submarine optical cables that provide crucial connections between continents.

In the March issue of Optica’s Optics & Photonics News (OPN), a cover story looks at how scientists and engineers are working to boost the capacity of submarine fiber networks—and perhaps use them to create a global network of environmental sensors at the same time.
