The optics and photonics community has a persistent problem: a shortage of skilled laborers who set up optical tables and lasers, install and maintain equipment, and perform other responsibilities to support the work done in the lab and on the shop floor. Growth in emerging areas such as integrated photonics and advanced manufacturing has only increased the demand for such workers—highlighting the critical need to fill the technician gap.

In the February issue of Optica's Optics & Photonics News (OPN), a cover story looks at this longstanding deficit and talks with a number of people working on recruiting and training new technicians.
