Supply Chains, Inflation and the Optics Industry

In recent months, concerns have increased about tight supply chains, their potential price impacts and whether the current upturn in inflation is temporary or here for the long haul. What does it mean for the optics and photonics business? Optica’s senior industry advisor, Tom Hausken, offers some thoughts in a Market Report column in the January 2022 issue of the society’s Optics & Photonics News (OPN).

Hausken notes that the optics business, like others, is feeling the impact of short-term price fluctuations and supply shortages. Yet in the long term, he says, the industry has shown “phenomenal” long-term inflation-adjusted compound annual growth of 9.4% across six decades. In addition to the OPN story, Hausken expanded on these ideas and others in a webinar presentation, available for streaming by Optica members.
