Surfing the Wakefield
DESY/Science Communication Lab
Last September, a feature in Optica’s Optics & Photonics News (OPN) provided an update on synchrotron light sources—facilities hundreds of meters long that accelerate electrons to near-light speeds, creating high-energy X-ray beams and enabling X-ray free-electron lasers. But what if you could do the same thing with something that fit on a good-sized lab bench?

In its February 2022 issue, OPN explores what’s new in laser plasma wakefield accelerators. These experimental devices use powerful laser fields in ionized plasmas to propel electrons to super-high energies in a fraction of the distance required by synchrotrons. The technology—if it can be transitioned from lab demonstrations to useful machines—might, in the future, let scientists “routinely access brilliant X-rays at facilities small and cheap enough to fit in university departments and perhaps hospitals.”

The First Time the Laser Was Classified

A feature in the January 2022 issue of Optica’s Optics & Photonics News (OPN) provided insights on a piece of early laser history: the untold story of the Pentagon’s 1959 classified first laser research project. Science writer and Optica Fellow Jeff Hecht offers a walk-through of that history—and of how government and corporate politics helped scuttle a Defense Department effort that might otherwise have resulted in the first laser.
