From 24 to 27 April, the Optica Biophotonics Congress: Biomedical Optics—an international forum focusing on technological solutions for medical challenges and applications-will take place in Fort Lauderdale, FL USA. And in the back of the minds of many attendees will be the question of clinical translation—of how to take a promising technology out of the lab, and get it into the hands of physicians to the benefit of patients.
A cover story in the April 2022 issue of Optica's magazine Optics & Photonics News, "From Lab to Clinic," explores just that translational path—from the perspective of three startup or early-stage companies at various stages of the journey. The case studies include Lumedica, a US-based developer of optical coherence tomography (OCT) systems that's disrupting the field with affordable devices; GenSight Biologics, a French firm that's combining optogenetics and specialized optoelectronic goggles for vision repair; and DiaMonTech, a German startup developing a small, noninvasive glucose-monitoring device based on infrared spectroscopy. |
