#ShutDownSTEM Day

The Optical Society (OSA) joined academic institutions and science and engineering societies in the grassroots movement #ShutDownSTEM on Wednesday, 10 June in support of Black Lives Matter.

OSA encouraged members and customers to join this day-long focus on racism in our community through education, action, and healing.

One important OSA Core Value is inclusivity. We believe that a higher level of inclusivity improves outcomes. We know that if we want to best serve the optics and photonics community, we need to make sure everyone’s voice is at the table.

It is our responsibility to reassess our efforts towards combating racism and building welcoming environments.

As part of this effort, OSA shut down all normal operations on 10 June so OSA staff would have the time to foucs on ways to impove the level of engagement to address racism in our community. We ask you to join us in the coming days, weeks, months, and years to make it a priority to address racism within our community.

Statement from OSA Leadership on Racial and Social Injustices

WASHINGTON —The Optical Society (OSA) leadership has issued the following statement on racial and social injustices:

Over the last few days there have been protests in some of our respective neighborhoods, across the US, and in cities around the globe, stemming from the recent killing of George Floyd. Virtual and Co-located: FiO + LS and the OSA Quantum 2.0 Conference

OSA determined that, with health and travel advisories still in place throughout the world, it is best to present all remaining 2020 meetings in a virtual format. This includes OSA Frontiers in Optics + Laser Science APS/DLS and OSA Quantum 2.0 Conference, both of which will be co-located in September. The introduction of the Quantum 2.0 Conference completes the FiO + LS quantum program which makes this a can’t-miss event to explore quantum technologies.

This year, the Luminate Finals: Pitch Competition will be presented as part of FiO + LS. Luminate is the only international startup accelerator focused solely on next-generation optics, photonics, and imaging (OPI). The awards program provides early-stage companies with the capital necessary to further develop their technologies, including $100,000 upon program acceptance, and a chance to win up to US $1 million in follow-on funding.

To make virtual OSA Meetings accessible to as many in our community as possible, we have also removed the barrier of cost. Participants can register for free to attend. (Contributing authors of oral talks and posters pay a US $100 publishing fee.) Recent virtual meetings presented by OSA illustrate that the format, coupled with free registration, results in a large and geographically diverse audience. All presentations will be digitally recorded, transcribed, and made available within 12 hours of the end of each session to encourage engagement and minimize time zone issues.

Why Capital Spending is So Important to Photonics

The segment of the optics and photonics industry most impacted by the current economic crisis will be the vendors of machine tools to make heavy equipment. When car sales decline as much as 50%, there is less demand to buy new tools to make the cars. Likewise for tools to make aircraft, when planes are being taken out of service as travelers stay home. However, the impact varies even within the machine tool sector, depending on the type of end user.

The OSA Foundation and The Wellman Center for Photomedicine (WCP) at the Massachusetts General Hospital, USA are seeking exceptional researchers and engineers for the Thomas F. Deutsch Fellowship in Biomedical Optics. Projects available are designed to advance optical techniques toward understanding and solving important scientific and biomedical problems. Applications from any field of biomedical optics are encouraged. 

This multidisciplinary Fellowship fosters interactions between researchers from diverse fields of science and medicine. This opportunity is a one-year assignment located at the Wellman Center in Boston, MA USA. The stipend will be based on postdoctoral years of experience and will range from US $53-$64K as set by the US National Institutes of Health.

Call for Papers - OSA/JSAP Joint English-language Symposia


You are invited to submit papers submit paper to the 2020 OSA/JSAP Joint English-language Symposia. The symposium will take place 8 – 11 September as a virtual meeting with a possible physical meeting at the Imadegawa Campus, Doshisha University, Kyoto-shi, Kyoto Japan. Papers in the following topics are due by 23 June: 1) Plasmonics and Nanophotonics, 2) Photonics Devices, Photonic Integrated Circuit and Silicon Phonics, 3) Lasers and Laser Materials Processing, 4) Information Photonics, 5) Nanocarbon and 2DMaterials, 6) Terahertz Photonics, 7) Quantum Optics and Nonlinear Optics. 2020 OSA Election: Candidate Profiles and Statements Available
 

2020 OSA Election: Watch for Your Ballot  

The OSA election for the 2021 Vice President and two Directors at Large opened on 17 June 2020 and will continue through 14 August 2020.  OSA needs your vote to select the best leaders for the Society.  Please read the candidates’ profiles and personal statements, and then take a few moments to cast your ballot. The ballot is fully accessible from your smart phone/mobile device.

Results will be announced Tuesday, 15 September 2020, at the OSA Annual Business Meeting during the 2020 FiO + LS Meeting and Quantum 2.0 Conference will be available on the OSA website in September.

*Individual, Emeritus and Recent Graduate members in good standing as of 24 July 2020 are eligible to vote in this election. Student and Youth Educator members are not eligible to vote.

 
 

Call for Nominations - John Tyndall Award


Nominate a colleague for the 2021 Tyndall Award  by 10 August. The award, presented by OSA and IEEE Photonics Society, recognizes outstanding contributions in any area of optical-fiber technology. Nominations should be submitted to IEEE Photonics Society. 

Call for Nominations - Herbert Walther Award


Nominate a colleague for the 2021 Walther Award  by 10 August. The award, presented OSA and Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (DPG), recognizes distinguished contributions in quantum optics and atomic physics as well as leadership in the international scientific community. Nominations should be submitted to OSA Awards.

OSA Fellow Monika Ritsch-Marte, Medical University of Innsbruck, Austria, emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary research in this Fellow Profile. “New questions cross boundaries, which creates challenges in optics while also driving the research.” She goes on to discuss the state of optics and photonics today and to give some important advice to young scientists. CLEO Pacific Rim 2020 – Now an all-virtual conference


The 14th Pacific Rim Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics (CLEO PR 2020), hosted by the Australian Optical Society, will take place virtually 3 – 5 August 2020 (Australian Eastern Standard Time). The conference will cover all major areas in lasers and optoelectronics. Learn more here.
