Call for Nominations – 2021 Advocate of Optics Recognition 

Do you know a public official who has been a champion for optics? Tell us about them. Each year, OSA’s Advocate of Optics Recognition commends an outstanding public official who demonstrates leadership in support of the advancement of the science of light. The Public Policy Council is soliciting nominations from OSA members and will select a candidate based on their commitment to science and science policy, level of familiarity with optics and photonics, level of interaction with OSA or OSA members in the past year, and record of consistent support of science, optics, and photonics.The deadline for submitting recommendations for the 2021 Advocate of Optics is 23 October 2020.

OSA Advocates in Support of International Students Studying in the U.S.

On 6 July 2020, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) proposed modifications to temporary exemptions for nonimmigrant F-1 and M-1 students attending schools in the U.S.   Nonimmigrant F-1 and M-1 students in the Student and Exchange Visitor Program are normally prohibited from taking a full online course load while remaining in the U.S., but during the Spring and Summer semesters of 2020, an exemption to this rule was provided due to COVID-19.  The proposed modification would have eliminated that exemption for the Fall 2020 Semester, forcing many students to return to their home countries, with very negative impacts. OSA worked actively to oppose this policy change, releasing a statement and signing on to a letter opposing the 6 July policy, and joining 16 other scientific societies in an amicus brief in support of the lawsuit to block the ICE decision. On 14 July, at the outset of a legal hearing challenging the ICE decision, the judge announced that ICE had agreed to rescind the 6 July decision.

DPG, which began in 1845 with just six members, has grown into a society of 60,000. It promotes physics and supports that community through meetings, events, publications, and more. You are invited to attend the 2020 OSA/JSAP Joint English-language Symposia, taking place virtually 18 – 21 September (Japan Standard Time), at the low JSAP member rate. Students, who are not presenting during the conference, attend for free. The Symposia, co-located with the 80th Japan Society of Applied Physics (JSAP) Autumn Meeting, covers a variety of topics such as plasmonics and nanophotonics, photonics devices, information photonics, lasers, quantum optics, nonlinear optics and more.
