Virtual and Co-located: FiO + LS and the OSA Quantum 2.0 Conference

Since April 2020, OSA has run our portfolio of conferences in a remote real-time format.  The Board decided to offer free registration and use the organization’s investment reserves to cover the cost of this benefit. All presentations have been digitally recorded, transcribed and made available to attendees within 12 hours of the end of each session to encourage engagement and minimize time zone issues. Over 30,000 have registered to our virtual meetings to-date, from all over the globe.

We hope you clear time on your calendar for the upcoming Frontiers in Optics + Laser Science (FiO/LS) and OSA’s Quantum 2.0 Conference, which will be co-located in September. The  Quantum 2.0 Conference complements the FiO/LS quantum programming, creating a can’t-miss event to explore quantum technologies.

This year, the Luminate Finals: Pitch Competition will be presented as part of FiO/LS. Luminate is the only international startup accelerator focused solely on next-generation optics, photonics, and imaging. This program provides early-stage companies with the capital necessary to further develop their technologies, including $100,000 USD upon program acceptance, and a chance to win up to $1 million USD in follow-on funding.

A Virtual Success!
Co-located Congresses Present 15,000 Minutes of Programming
 

The OSA Imaging and Applied Optics Congress and the OSA Optical Sensors and Sensing Congress recently concluded a joint, co-located virtual meeting held 22-26 June. More than 4,700 individuals representing 81 countries registered. 

Among the 634 technical presentations, Imaging Congress plenary speaker Katie Bouman, California Institute of Technology, USA (pictured), discussed “Capturing the First Picture of a Black Hole and Beyond”, which highlighted the methods and procedures used to produce the first image of a black hole from the Event Horizon Telescope. It had been theorized for decades that a black hole would leave a "shadow" on a background of hot gas. Taking a picture of this black hole shadow would help to address a number of important scientific questions, both on the nature of black holes and the validity of general relativity. Unfortunately, due to its small size, traditional imaging approaches require an Earth-sized radio telescope. In her talk, Bouman discussed techniques the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration has developed to photograph a black hole using the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), a network of telescopes scattered across the globe. She summarized how the data from the 2017 observations were calibrated and imaged, and explained some of the challenges that arose with a heterogeneous telescope array like the EHT.

Cast Your Ballot in the OSA Election!
 

Help select OSA’s future leadership by voting in the OSA election for 2021 offices. The election for the 2021 OSA Vice President and two Directors at Large runs through 14 August 2020, 23:59 U.S. EDT.  Please read the candidates’ profiles and personal statements, and then submit your vote.  Your vote makes a difference!

Election results will be announced on Tuesday, 15 September 2020, at the Annual Business Meeting during the 2020 FiO + LS Meeting.  Results will be available on the OSA website. 

*Individual, Emeritus and Early Career members in good standing as of 24 July 2020 are eligible to vote in this election. Student members are not currently eligible to vote.

OSA Fellow Mourad Zghal, University of Carthage, Tunisia, is a mentor to graduate students and advocate for strengthening research on the African continent. His department often hosts students from several African countries, including Tunisia, Senegal, Chad, and Côte d'Ivoire to help advance their research.

In addition, in 2016 Mourad established the African Laser Centre, a virtual “center of excellence” for facilitating optics research, and has used his position to bring more opportunities to the continent. What's Ahead for Optical Communications?

As a sector of the optics and photonics industry, optical communications will fare better than many in 2020. If the pandemic isn't enough to slow the market, however, the ongoing trade conflict between the U.S. and China may disrupt it more. This point was made in a recent OIDA webinar on the optical communications market, featuring Lisa Huff of market research firm Omdia (for a summary, see the OSA blog here). Omdia currently expects about 1% growth in capital spending by telecom service providers in 2020—that is, approximately flat with 2019. Flat spending would be an enviable outcome for many sectors of the economy right now. Deployment of wireless networks and upgrading networks to manage increased video traffic from isolating at home are helping to support the capital spending.

The 14th Pacific Rim Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics (CLEO PR 2020), hosted by the Australian Optical Society, will take place virtually 3 – 5 August 2020 (Australian Eastern Standard Time). The conference will cover all major areas in lasers and optoelectronics. Learn more here.

Authors submitting to core OSA journals may now include a document that provides useful supplementary information, such as expanded descriptions of materials and methods. The supplemental document will undergo peer review; however, the primary manuscript must satisfy the journal’s acceptance criteria without the supplemental PDF file.
