Two past presidents of The Optical Society (OSA) -- Joseph W. Goodman (1992) and Robert R. Shannon (1985) have been honored with endowed chairs at the University of Arizona College of Optical Sciences in Tucson, Ariz., U.S.A.

Joseph W. Goodman of Stanford University (left) and Robert R. Shannon of The University of Arizona (right)  Goodman, an OSA Fellow, and his wife Hon Mai donated $500,000 to create the J.W. and H.M. Goodman Endowed Chair in Optical Sciences. The Robert R. Shannon Endowed Chair in Optical Sciences was funded by friend and colleague, former OSA President James C. Wyant (2010).

As a result of the Goodmans' generosity, Wyant, will match their gift with a $1.5 million donation from the department's Distinguished Endowed Chair in Optical Sciences Fund. Wyant created the Distinguished Endowed Chair and fund in 2018 with a $20 million gift to the U. of Arizona College of Optical Sciences.

The 2019 International OSA Network of Students (IONS) conference took place on January 11-14 at the Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) in Manipal, in the sunny south-western Indian state of Karnataka. The conference was a resounding success, and the local OSA Student Chapter is to be commended for putting on such a scientifically engaging, interactive, enthusiastic and overwhelmingly positive event. The scientific highlights included excellent high level technical presentations from a variety of North American, Indian and South East Asian faculty, as well as outstanding student and post-doc contributions from all across India. In addition to the excellent scientific oral presentation and poster sessions, there was a banquet with an incredibly interesting cultural show, a hiking trip to a nearby picturesque waterfall, and a conference-concluding excursion to the beach (watching the stunning Arabian Sea sunset was a treat!). Throughout the entire conference, its major highlight was the enthusiasm and engagement of the local student hosts and their faculty advisors: they were really enjoying themselves, were going out of their way to help all national and international participants feel welcome, and were both humble and (justifiably) proud of the level of science and of inter-delegate personal connections that were evident throughout. There were many stimulating conversations about science and careers and many of the students have reached out to us online after the conference to further the connections. Now, south-west India is not easy to reach from North America (generally 3 flight segments, >30 hours of travel); but as we soaked up the science and the culture and the enthusiasm of the local students [and the hot weather :-)] during this wonderful IONS experience, we decided we'd all come back here at the drop of a hat! Kudos to our OSA MAHE hosts for putting on such a great conference!!!

Eli Yablonovitch, University of California, Berkeley, USA has been named the winner of the 2019 Frederic Ives Medal/Jarus W. Quinn Prize for "diverse and deep contributions to optical science including photonic crystals, strained semiconductor lasers, and new record-breaking solar cell physics." This is OSA's highest award, recognizing overall distinction in optics.

Prof. Chang-Hasnain, University of California, Berkeley, USA will attend the OSK meeting  at Welli Hilli Park, Gangwon-do, S. Korea later this month. She will deliver a plenary talk on vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSEL), present the OSA-OSK Student Prize, and speak during the Women in Optics program.

The Nanny, Manny, Granny Grant offers up to four hundred dollars (US $400) per family, each calendar year, to assist OSA members with family care in order to attend an OSA-sponsored meeting or conference.1 This grant provides support to offset the extra expenses of leaving home (e.g., extra day care or babysitting services, etc.), or assistance needed at a meeting due to a disability.

Allowable Expenses:
Eligible expenditures include care providers (onsite at the conference location or extra expenses for additional family care at home) and airfare/hotel for a caregiver to accompany the family member to the conference location.2 

OSA does not endorse any care providers, therefore, grant recipients are solely responsible for their choice of care provider.

The photonics industry loves to talk about technology, but not as much about how to manufacture it. Technologies like integrated photonics and quantum communications sound cutting-edge and cool. But developing the supply chains to make the products? Not so much. Yet, companies face these challenges all the time. Small companies often have difficulty finding suppliers who will accept their orders. Or if one does, it may be merely willing to manufacturer a part to a specification, but it won't work with the startup to design it for manufacturing.
