The OSA Election for the 2019 Vice President and two Directors at Large will open 20 June 2018 and will continue through 17 August 2018. OSA needs your vote to select the best leaders for the Society. Please read the candidates' profiles and personal statements to become familiar with each candidate's background and to learn what each candidate hopes to achieve if successful in the OSA Elections.

Election results will be announced on Tuesday, 18 September 2018, at the OSA Annual Business Meeting during the 2018 FiO + LS Meeting in Washington, DC, USA. Results will be available on the OSA website in September.

The OSA Foundation in partnership with Towneley Capital Management invites you to a free webinar on Basic Estate Planning and Charitable Giving Post-2017 Tax Act. This will be a 60 minute two-part webinar. The first will be an overview of estate planning for OSA Members. The second will focus on charitable giving and in particular some of the tax benefits that might be achieved by planning charitable donations. Both segments will be focused on practical advice for consumers. The presentations and materials will be educational in nature only.

The OSA Nanny, Manny, Granny Grant covers up to four hundred dollars (US $400) for OSA member attendees who need care for a family member onsite or who will incur extra expenses due to leaving dependents at home (e.g., extra day care, babysitting services, elder care, etc.). Grant recipients will be notified two weeks or earlier to the start of their chosen conference. Funding is limited and will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis.

I was excited about my lecture and interaction with the students and faculty in the Physics Department at Howard University. I met the new department chair, Prof. Quinton Williams, who is launching a new advanced optics program at Howard; a junior professor, Thomas Searles, who's passionate and energetic about his research in THz science and technology. I am very pleased to hear his research is supported by AFOSR. Like Thomas, the physics students at Howard University were engaging and showed a lot of passion and interest in advancing their science careers. Under Prof. Quinton Williams' leadership, I believe the optics program will grow and that the upcoming OSA Student Chapter will keep students engaged. Howard will also have a new building for physics soon.
