The OSA election for the 2019 Vice President and two Directors at Large will open 20 June 2018 and will continue through 17 August 2018. OSA needs your vote to select the best leaders for the Society! Please read the candidates' profiles and personal statements, and then take a few moments to cast your ballot. The ballot is fully accessible from your smart phone/mobile device.

Election results will be announced on Tuesday, 18 September 2018, at the OSA Annual Business Meeting during the 2018 FiO + LS Meeting in Washington, DC, USA. Results will be available on the OSA website in September.

*Individual, Emeritus and Recent Graduate members in good standing as of 27 July 2018 are eligible to vote in this election. Student and Youth Educator members are not eligible to vote.

Basic Estate Planning and Charitable Giving Post-2017 Tax Act Webinar
 

The OSA Foundation in partnership with Towneley Capital Management hosted a two part webinar on Basic Estate Planning and Charitable Giving Post-2017 Tax Act. This informative 60 minute two-part webinar was well received by the community! If you were not able to participate on the June 14, 2018 webinar, a recording of it can be found here.

The first part of this webinar was an overview of estate planning for our members. The second part focused on charitable giving and in particular some of the tax benefits that might be achieved by planning charitable donations. Both segments focused on practical advice for members and were educational in nature only.

Apply for an OSA Nanny, Manny, Granny Grant
 

The OSA Nanny, Manny, Granny Grant covers up to four hundred dollars (US $400) for OSA member attendees who need care for a family member onsite or who will incur extra expenses due to leaving dependents at home (e.g., extra day care, babysitting services, elder care, etc.). Grant recipients will be notified two weeks or earlier to the start of their chosen conference. Funding is limited and will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Traveling Lecturer Spotlight: Síle Nic Chormaic

The Traveling Lecturer trip to the DIT OSA Student Chapter at the Dublin Institute of Technology was a very enjoyable experience for me and I hope for all the student chapter members who participated as well. Aside from a one hour lecture on "Using laser light to control, probe and manipulate objects in ways you may not have imagined", I spent several hours discussing with the chapter members and their faculty advisor. I also spent some very enjoyable and informative time visiting the optics labs and seeing their work on sensing using tapered optical fibers and the flexible holography work. I was very impressed with all the work that I saw and the professionalism that was displayed by the students in ensuring that the lab visits led to fruitful discussions.

Herbert Walther Award - recognizes distinguished contributions in quantum optics and atomic physics as well as leadership in the international scientific community. This award is co-sponsored by OSA and Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (DPG).

John Tyndall Award - recognizes an individual who has made outstanding contributions in any area of optical-fiber technology, including optical fibers themselves, the optical components used in fiber systems, as well as transmission systems and networks using fibers. This award is co-sponsored by OSA and IEEE Photonics Society. Nominations for the 2018 award should be submitted to IEEE Photonics Society.

Call for Input - Decadal Assessment on Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Science
 

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine is conducting a Decadal Assessment on Atomic, Molecular, and Optical (AMO) Science with support from the Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation. We invite you to share your suggestions and comments on the future of AMO science with the study committee by filling out the form

Responses Needed: EU Questions the Safety of Indium Phosphide

The European Commission is reviewing whether to add indium phosphide (InP) to the list of banned substances under the RoHS, the Restriction of Hazardous Substances directive. The E.U. RoHS governing body has commissioned the German Oeko Institut (Institute for Applied Ecology) to conduct the review and recommend whether InP should be listed as a restricted substance. OSA Industry Development Associates (OIDA) believes that InP should be granted an exception, at least for conventional uses involving planar photonics, such as semiconductor lasers and detectors. OIDA asks its members with an interest in this topic to contact us, so that we can coordinate with other responders.

The RoHS directive was adopted in 2003 and covers ten substances, including cadmium. The review is likely triggered by the use of InP in quantum dots as a substitute for cadmium selenide (CdSe) in quantum dot displays. Quantum dots are used in liquid crystal displays to convert an LED backlight to pure colors to provide a better color gamut and a brighter display. The E.U. has granted an exemption for cadmium for this use, but exemptions are restricted, short-term, and difficult to navigate for the layperson.

OIDA members who have a stake in InP technology-either as a materials supplier, component manufacturer, or component customer-should take a close look at this inquiry, phases I and II. Phase I of the inquiry opened 20 April 2018, and runs to 15 June 2018. Phase II will begin this summer.

LIDAR Continues to Promise Explosive Growth

Shipments of LIDAR modules for automotive applications will reach nearly 5 million units by 2025, from small volumes manufactured for field trials today. This is according to a report from Woodside Capital Partners and Yole Développment, distributed in May to OSA Industry Development Associates (OIDA) members. Most of the unit volume will be used in ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) applications, with the rest used in fully robotic vehicles. The revenues will be dominated by shipments for robotic vehicles, however, with revenues for both robotic and ADAS applications expected to total $6 billion in 2015.

LIDAR is a hot topic for the emerging field of driverless cars, but the demands on the technology are significant; driverless cars require low latency, high resolution, and high frame rate response, at a cost affordable for automotive customers.
