Don't Forget to Cast Your Ballot in the OSA Election! 
 

Help select OSA's future leadership by voting in the OSA election for 2019 offices. The election for the 2019 OSA Vice President and two Directors at Large will continue through 17 August 2018, 23:59 U.S. Eastern Daylight Time. If you haven't yet voted, please read the candidates' profiles and personal statements, and then submit your vote. Every vote makes a difference!

Election results will be announced on Tuesday, 18 September 2018, at the OSA Annual Business Meeting during the 2018 FiO + LS Meeting in Washington, DC, USA. Results will be available on the OSA website in September.

*Individual, Emeritus and Recent Graduate members in good standing as of 27 July 2018 are eligible to vote in this election. Student and Youth Educator members are not eligible to vote.

Traveling Lecturer Spotlight: Jannick Rolland

My experience meeting with the students of the SUT OSA Student Chapter was extremely rewarding. Everyone was very well prepared and the students asked many questions about freeform optics. We had a follow up meeting with about 10 PhD students and a few graduate students who presented a summary of their research as a follow up meeting to my lecture. I was able to have many stimulating discussions with the students of the chapter and the faculty advisors. Per our discussion, and some communication with Synopsys, students will be engaging in advanced simulations using the lens design software CODE V. We plan to launch student internships starting fall 2018 as well as remote collaborative projects across our institutions. We are also working on a MOU agreement between our universities to facilitate these exchanges. I found the students in Thailand sharp, engaged, motivated and doing creative projects. I was truly impressed and thankful I had this opportunity through the OSA Traveling Lecturer Program.

Herbert Walther Award - recognizes distinguished contributions in quantum optics and atomic physics as well as leadership in the international scientific community. This award is co-sponsored by OSA and Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (DPG).
Submission Deadline: 10 August

John Tyndall Award - recognizes an individual who has made outstanding contributions in any area of optical-fiber technology, including optical fibers themselves, the optical components used in fiber systems, as well as transmission systems and networks using fibers. This award is co-sponsored by OSA and IEEE Photonics Society. Nominations for the 2019 award should be submitted to IEEE Photonics Society.

OSA OPPORTUNITIES
Apply for an OSA Nanny, Manny, Granny Grant
 

The OSA Nanny, Manny, Granny Grant covers up to four hundred dollars (US $400) for OSA Member attendees who need care for a family member onsite or who will incur extra expenses due to leaving dependents at home (e.g., extra day care, babysitting services, elder care, etc.). Grant recipients will be notified two weeks or earlier to the start of their chosen conference. Funding is limited and will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The Display Market Continues to Surprise

Just when you thought that the $140 billion display industry would be maturing, something new comes along. OLED displays have been in commercial products for most of two decades, but were introduced into large format TVs about five years ago and are most associated with LG Display. Photoemissive quantum dots were introduced into LCD backlights for TVs about the same time, by Sony. But there's more to come. Samsung introduced new emissive microLED displays this January, at CES 2018. Not only is the technology a break from LCD and OLED displays, the displays have a very fine bezel, allowing Samsung to create a 146-inch diagonal wall display-called "The Wall"-by tiling a seamless mosaic of smaller displays. That's over 12 feet diagonally. Samsung recently announced it is now taking orders for the microLED TV product, aimed first at enterprise customers.

OIDA Sensors Forum-AR/VR is More than a Display

Both keynote speakers at the OIDA Executive Forum on the Exploding Role of Optics in Sensing cited AR/VR (augmented and virtual reality) as a leading example of a very broad technology wave that merges human-computer perception and will require advances in optics and other technologies prior to commercialization. These themes were explored further when investors in the AR/VR industry asked the optics community participants for lighter, smaller but also higher resolution and more intelligent optical sensors. The OIDA event was held on 14 May in San Jose, CA collocated with CLEO 2018.

Optical Materials Express Emerging Researcher Best Paper Prize 2017 

We are delighted to announce the introduction of a prize to recognize the best Optical Materials Express (OMEx) paper from an emerging researcher. The inaugural winner is Harnessing nonlinearities near material absorption resonances for reducing losses in plasmonic modulators, by Christian Haffner from ETH Zurich, Switzerland and his colleagues.

The prize recognizes a student or early-career researcher (within five years of earning his/her degree) who is the first author of a 2017 paper that a committee of OMEx' editors judged to be outstanding, based on the scientific significance, quality, and presentation of the results. OSA Continuum is Now Accepting Submissions

This new, broad-scope, rapid-publication journal will assess submissions for accuracy, scientific rigor, and quality of presentation. In an effort to accelerate scientific discovery, OSA Continuum encourages the submission of negative results and reproducibility studies, and will provide a transparent peer review option for authors and reviewers.

OSA Continuum is now welcoming submissions, and the first issue publishes in September 2018. Article Processing Charges are waived for all articles published in 2018.
