USA Science and Engineering Festival Returns to Washington, DC
 

The USA Science & Engineering Festival is returning to Washington, DC in 2018. The biannual event is held in the Walter E. Washington Convention and is focused on encouraging the next generation of engineers, scientists, and technologists the importance of science and math education. OSA participates with a booth on the show floor along with sister societies in the AIP family (other participating societies include AAPM, AAPT, AAS, ACA, AMS, APS and ASA). The shared booth is themed the "Science of Everyday Physics" (a play on the book Science of Everyday Things). For more information about the booth, please contact Curtis Burrill at cburrill@osa.org

Call for Applications: 2018 Siegman International School on Lasers
 

Application Deadline: 15 March 2018

The Siegman International School on Lasers invites up to 100 graduate students from around the world for a week-long immersive program, providing an in-depth learning environment on lasers and their applications.

The Siegman International School on Lasers was established in honor of Anthony E. Siegman, 1999 OSA President, founding board member of The OSA Foundation and widely known expert on lasers and optics.

The 2018 school is hosted by the Technical University of Denmark and will take place on the Island of Hven, Backafallsbyn, Sweden from 29 July - 4 August 2018. Apply today to be considered!

Traveling Lecturer Spotlight: Shilong Pan

I was invited by OSA McGill Chapter to provide a lecture on optical vector analysis, and was happy to accept the invitation since the topic is exactly what I have been working on for seven years. I met with Professor David Plant, OSA Fellow, where he introduced me what they are currently working on and took me on a lab tour. I gave a talk to the members of OSA McGill Chapter where we have a lively discussion. The questions raised by the members were professional and very constructive. I was also encouraged by their comments on the possible application of the technique in silicon photonics.

This was a great experience as it gave me the opportunity to visit a new group, the chance to meet some old friends and exchanged ideas, as well as promote international exchanges and collaboration.

OSA OPPORTUNITIES

Advocate for Optics and Photonics - Participate in Capitol Hill Visits

24-25, April 2018

Advocate for optics and photonics directly to your members of Congress or their staff by joining OSA and its National Photonics Initiative (NPI) partners for Capitol Hill Visits in Washington, DC on April 24-25, 2018. We encourage participants at all career levels and backgrounds from PhD students and young professionals to experienced members of industry and academia.

Members of Congress want to hear from the people living in their district/state. This is a great opportunity to show the value of your research or industry, inform Congressional offices about optics, and start or continue to build a relationship with your Congressional offices.

Capitol Hill Visits will focus on the NPI, R&D funding, and other legislation relevant to optics and photonics. Specific topics for 2018 visits will be sent out to participants closer to the date. NPI staff will arrange all of your Congressional meetings and provide you with documents to leave with the offices. Participants will be placed in teams to do their visits led by a staff member of one of the sponsoring societies or an experienced Capitol Hill visits participant. A mandatory training session will take place the afternoon of April 24 and all Congressional meetings will take place on April 25.
