The OSA elections have closed and the results will be announced on Tuesday, 18 September 2018 at the OSA Annual Business Meeting during the 2018 FiO + LS Meeting in Washington, DC, USA. The Annual Business Meeting is scheduled for 17:30-18:15 in the Kalorama Room of the Washington Hilton, Washington DC. Come meet the newly elected leaders and learn more about your Society's activities. In addition to the election results and an update on activities, members will hear a report from OSA Treasurer George Bayz.

I had the opportunity to speak at CIOR and SCOP in Colombia where each chapter organized special events. SCOP organized a special half-day event for the celebration of the day of light. The event organization was also supported by the Colombian Network of Women Scientist, and was attended approximately by 100 students including the Provost and Dean of Sciences. CIOR organized a two-day event, also intended to celebrate the day of light. It was attended by 20-30 students. Some students gave presentations of their work in very diverse topics, since the group is multidisciplinary. I highlighted the role of optics and photonics in our lives where I saw the students get very enthusiastic. My lecture included several videos of hot topics in the field and its applications. On the second day the students did a panel with the lecturers to ask them about their own experience as researchers. It was a very nice exchange that included some questions about the challenges for women in science. Overall it was a nice experience and one that I hope to do again in the future.

The National Photonics Initiative (NPI)-a broad-based collaborative alliance among industry, academia, and government to raise awareness of optics, photonics and quantum science and technology-praised a bipartisan vote in the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation to advance S. 3143, The National Quantum Initiative Act. The NQI Act will establish a comprehensive, coordinated national policy to encourage quantum research and technology and develop a workforce capable of transforming that work into real world applications.

The Committee unanimously voted to report the NQI Act, with important changes suggested by the NPI to enhance the bill's effectiveness, to the chamber floor. The Senate Committee action follows bipartisan approval of similar legislation in the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology in June. The NPI has been working with Congress over the past year to develop this comprehensive national quantum policy.

There is a lot of anticipation for driverless cars on city streets, but autonomous vehicles have already been demonstrated successfully for several years in more structured environments. For example, Caterpillar introduced an autonomous truck as early as 1996 and its autonomous mining trucks have been operating since 2013. John Deere has had self-driving, GPS-guided farm equipment for years, including prototypes that omit the driver cab altogether. And unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have a longer history for military use.

LIDAR will be a key technology for future autonomous vehicles, but more optical equipment than just LIDAR will be needed to navigate in so-called edge cases and challenging weather conditions. Such environments include off-road driving, military situations where active (illuminated) imaging may not be desirable, and in tunnels and other places where GPS may be unavailable.
