The Optical Society Members and Leaders Participate in Global March for Science
 

Held on 14 April, the March for Science took place in cities around the globe. Scientific organizations like The Optical Society (OSA) walked together for a non-partisan celebration of the value of science and scientific inquiry. Here are some photos from the event.
Richards Recognized With The Pegasus Professor Award

OSA Fellow Kathleen Richardson was recognized with the University of Central Florida (UCF) Pegasus Professor Award for developing a special glass with specific optical properties and ability to withstand extreme temperatures that can be used in devices such as night vision goggles or infrared cameras. Richardson worked with her students and an international company to create this specific type of glass for a commercial project, initially creating the glass in her lab and then working with the company to show how to scale up production. OSA congratulates Richards on this achievement.

Traveling Lecturer Spotlight: Des Gibson

I presented a colloquium on 21 February, 2018 to the BU Optics & Photonics Club in Thailand as part of The Optical Society (OSA) Traveling Lecturer Program. The presentation was titled "Mid infrared photonics: route to low cost portable and autonomous gas sensors". The presentation focused on recent research and development of novel mid-infrared light sources and detectors, incorporated within non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) gas sensors with two NDIR reflective optical configurations described, addressing single and multi-gas sensing. The audience was comprised of students and faculty members from various universities in Bangkok, and local attendees from industry. The presentation was topical and aligned with many of the optics & photonics club member's research themes. The presentation was followed by in-depth and a wide range of questions.

I highly recommend the OSA Traveling Lecturer Program since there's a lot to learn in terms of new research, opportunity to set-up new collaborative research activities and inform the visited chapter/section of innovative research, development and applications that are happening across the industry. The hospitality provided by the BU Optics & Photonics Club was excellent. They also gave me the opportunity to sample local cuisine and culture. I highly recommend the OSA Traveling Lecturer to others.

We are now accepting nominations for the 2018 Paul F. Forman Team Engineering Excellence Award. This award recognizes team technical achievements such as product engineering, process and software development, and patent development, as well as contributions to society such as engineering education, publication and management, and furthering public appreciation of optical engineering. Recent winners include: Guide Star Alliance, Advanced LIGO Engineering Team, Logic Analysis Tool Team (LAT Team).

Join us on Friday, 27 April for a Reddit "Ask Me Anything," with Professor Michal Lipson from the Electrical Engineering Department at Columbia, University, USA. Lipson was one of the main pioneers in the field of silicon photonics and is the inventor of several and critical building blocks in the field, including the GHz silicon modulator. She holds over 20 patents and is the author of over 200 technical papers.

John Dudley, is a professor of physics at the CNRS Research Institute FEMTO-ST in France. His research activities focus equally on experimental and theoretical studies in nonlinear optics, with particular emphasis on optical fibre propagation, ultrafast pulse metrology, noise and instabilities, and nonlinear dynamics in general. He is author or co-author of more than 200 peer-reviewed international papers and more than 120 invited conferences. He is an OSA Fellow and the chairman of the International Steering Committee for the International Year of Light 2015 and the chairman for the 2018 International Day of Light Steering Committee.
