Traveling Lecturer Spotlight: Ingrid Wilke

The visit to the Research Center for Physics in Jakarta, Indonesia, was my first trip as a Traveling Lecturer on behalf of The Optical Society and I truly enjoyed the experience. My presentation on "Broadband Terahertz Wave Spectroscopy" was well received by the audience consisting of graduate students and senior researchers as demonstrated by the audience's comments and questions during and after my lecture. Moreover, my host, the OSA Indonesia Section, provided the opportunity to tour some of the research center laboratories during my visit and to discuss research over lunch and dinner. Furthermore, the host handled all aspects of the logistics of my trip and lecture with excellent quality. I never felt lost on my first visit to Jakarta, the massive capital of Indonesia. In order to broaden my insight into Indonesian society beyond research, the OSA Indonesia Section, arranged for a day of sightseeing in Jakarta following the day of the lecture. The OSA Traveling Lecturer Program made it possible for the local optical sciences research community to bring an international expert on the topic to the country and transfer knowledge on terahertz wave spectroscopy to the Research Center and OSA Indonesia Section members. The program has also fostered scientific dialogue and friendship between researchers in the United States of America and Indonesia.

Apply to the ICTP Winter College on Extreme Non-linear Optics, Attosecond Science and High-field Physics

5 - 16 February 2018
Trieste, Italy

The aim of the Winter College is to offer Ph.D. students a broad training on extreme light science: from ultra short and ultra intense laser pulse generation, to attosecond and Free Electron Laser (FEL) technology, focusing on applications of attosecond pulse generation in atomic and molecular physics, photo-chemistry and nanoscience, and the application of extreme light sources to matter-radiation interactions in general. An ICTP PREPARATORY SCHOOL will be organized the week before the College (from 29 January to 3 February 2018) for a limited number of selected participants. See the ICTP website for more information. The Promising AR/VR Market

The largest optics and photonics segment is display manufacturing, and its most exciting sub-segment is headset displays for virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) applications. (Mixed or hybrid reality is also used in this context).

Proponents suggest that the next consumer computing platform could be AR/VR, following the personal computer, the web, and mobile phones. This is a big claim, with some forecasts projecting US$10 billion in hardware revenues as early as 2019. Forecasters agree that VR will dominate at first, mainly for gaming, and later for entertainment. AR will likely grow and dominate in the longer term, for a range of enterprise applications such as health care and product design.
