OSA President Eric Mazur Visits Tokyo, Japan

OSA President Eric Mazur, pictured with OSJ President Jun Tanida attended Optics and Photonics Japan 2017 in Tokyo in late October. OSA and the Optical Society of Japan
co-sponsored symposia on nanophotonics and digital photonics. In addition to hosting a member reception, OSA presented best student paper prizes to Aina Ikezaki, Wakayama University and Masafumi Suzuki, Osaka University.

Amy Eskilson is the President and CEO of Inrad Optics, a manufacturer of exceptional quality crystal materials, crystal devices and high precision optical components. As the leader of a small publicly-held company, Amy has a responsibility to both the business and to its shareholders. She also embraces her role as the company's Chief Culture Officer, and as such, works to mentor younger employees as well as challenge and excite longtime contributors.

Amy is an engaged advocate for photonics, championing the field from the importance of basic research through the downstream commercialization of photonics technologies and is currently a Director-at-Large on the OSA Board of Directors.

Traveling Lecturer Spotlight: Charles Laperle

This was my first experience as a Traveling Lecturer with OSA. I really enjoyed giving a talk at a workshop organized by the Aston University Chapter in Birmingham, UK where I met with enthusiastic students and professors. I was able to provide a different perspective, from industry, on optics and photonics technology which was well received since there was a lot of questions after my talk. It also gave me the opportunity to learn about their work during a lab tour of their labs.

I feel both sides, the student chapter and myself, truly benefited from this interaction. I would highly recommend members to join the Traveling Lecturer Program since it allows you to share your work and knowledge, meet and interact with great students, and discuss the challenges we face both from industry and academia. The sharing of ideas makes this activity very rewarding which can lead to some future collaboration. Chapters and Sections should not hesitate to use this benefit as it brings academia and industry together to discuss their current area of research, provide a perspective on how technology is used, and discuss various challenges we all face.

Mazur Attends the Asia Communications and Photonics Conference (ACP) 2017

OSA President Eric Mazur attended the Asia Communications and Photonics Conference (ACP) 2017 in Guangzhou, China, in early November 2017. In addition to a plenary talk, Extreme Optics with Zero Refractive Index, Eric presented four student best paper prizes to groups from KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden, Peking University, China, Zhejiang University, China, and University of California at Santa Barbara, USA.

OSA Technical Groups Recognize Young Investigators 

Congratulations to Alexandra Boehm, University of California Berkeley, and Elizabeth Saionz, University of Rochester, who were selected to receive the Young Investigator Award at the OSA Fall Vision Meeting, which was held in Washington, D.C., from 13 -15 October. Boehm and Saionz were selected for the recognition by the leaders of the four technical groups within the OSA Vision and Color Technical Division.

The OSA Ultrafast Optical Phenomena Technical Group also chose to recognize a young investigator at Ultrafast Optics 2017 (UFOXI) in Jackson Hole Wyoming, USA last month. Congratulations to Derrek Wilson of Kansas State University, who received the technical group's Best Young Investigator Award for his poster presentation "Generating long wave IR few-cycle pulses for strong field science."

Peter J. Winzer named 2018 John Tyndall Award Recipient

Congratulations to Peter Winzer, Nokia Bell Labs, USA the 2018 John Tyndall Award recipient. Winzer is recognized "for contributions to understanding and advancing the capacity of coherent optical communication systems including advanced modulation formats and spatial multiplexing." The award, co-sponsored by The Optical Society and the IEEE Photonics Society, will be presented during OFC 2018 and honors outstanding contributions in any area of optical-fiber technology, including optical fibers themselves, the optical components used in fiber systems, as well as transmission systems and networks using fibers.

Unique Career Opportunity - OSA Congressional Science Policy Fellowships       

Application Deadline: 5 January 2018

Combine your interest in policy with your science background and apply for the 2018-2019 OSA Congressional Science Policy Fellowships. Congressional Fellows spend one year on Capitol Hill working as legislative assistants on the staff of a member of U.S. Congress or Congressional Committee. Applicants must have a Ph.D. by the start of the fellowship, 1 September 2018, to be eligible. Mid- and late-career applicants are also encouraged to apply. In addition to being a great opportunity for young professionals, it is also an ideal way to spend an academic sabbatical or leave of absence from a company. Applications for The Ivan P. Kaminow Outstanding Early Career Professional Prize are Open       

Application Deadline: 30 November 2017

Applications for the 2018 Ivan P. Kaminow Outstanding Early Career Professional Prize is now open. Each year, one early career professional will receive funding to attend The OSA Leadership Meeting in additional to an OSA-managed Meeting of their choice. Recipients will also have the opportunity to be placed and mentored on OSA Committees, further enhancing their professional development.

This fund is sponsored by the Kaminow Family, Intel Corporation, and personal donations from the OSA Community.

Apply to the ICTP Winter College on Extreme Non-linear Optics, Attosecond Science and High-field Physics

5 - 16 February 2018
Trieste, Italy

The aim of the Winter College is to offer Ph.D. students a broad training on extreme light science: from ultra short and ultra intense laser pulse generation, to attosecond and Free Electron Laser (FEL) technology, focusing on applications of attosecond pulse generation in atomic and molecular physics, photo-chemistry and nanoscience, and the application of extreme light sources to matter-radiation interactions in general. An ICTP PREPARATORY SCHOOL will be organized the week before the College (from 29 January to 3 February 2018) for a limited number of selected participants. See the ICTP website for more information.
