OSA Commemorates the Women of Optics
This month, OSA celebrates women in our field by sharing special tributes from members. We have captured over 750 voices from our industry with stories ranging from mentorship, research discoveries, inspiration and leadership. Please watch this video where three OSA Members discuss their passion for the field.
We encourage you to also visit osa.org/womeninscience to post a tribute, read a story or hear colleagues discuss their dedication to advancing the field of optics and leveraging photonics to improve our world. All posted tributes get shared via @OpticalSociety and are emailed to the honoree.

María J. Yzuel Awarded ‘Gender Equality Award – igUAldad 2107’
OSA Fellow Member María Josefa Yzuel, professor emeritus at Autonomous University, Barcelona Spain, has been awarded this year’s Gender Equality Award (igUAldad) by the University of Alicante, Spain, in recognition for her commitment to gender equality and her academic and scientific careers.
With the creation of the Association of Women Researchers and Technologists, Yzuel works towards defending non-discrimination and equal opportunities for women and men in academia with the objective of helping and fostering the incorporation of young women researchers into the research field.
The ‘Gender Equality Award (igUAldad)’ recognizes the work carried out by individuals, groups, entities or institutions which stand out for their defense of equality between women and men, and also to professionals whose trajectory exemplifies academic excellence, for giving visibility to the contribution of women in scientific advances and social progress, and helping to break away from the androcentric perspective prevailing over science, research and academia. This prize was first awarded in 2013 and coincided with the commemoration of International Women’s Day.

OSA Traveling Lecturer Spotlight: Mary Lou Jepsen
It was the candid honesty over private lunch with just a dozen doctoral students that stays with me. I went there to be dazzled by them, the postdocs and the professors in the labs of Washington University in St. Louis, a leader in biomedical imaging - an area that I’m now working in full-time. By lunchtime I was full of ideas and enthusiasm for their work, and thrilled at the opportunity to see it up-close. In return I was to “sing for my supper.” Later that afternoon with an OSA Fellow lecture, which had been seeded over drinks on a cruise ship at an OSA conference the previous spring. My main goal on this visit was to develop some lasting bonds; I have been greatly inspired by work done at Washington University
But this lunch brought me back in time to my own earlier choices. These brilliant young scientists described the struggle to persevere with their PhDs, the long years on meager compensation, the reality of credit still being apportioned in a non-linear way that doesn’t reflect (or credit) all who contribute or even those who contribute most. Hairline decisions like whose paper gets to be published first, in what journal and who gets listed as first author - make or break early careers. I tried to advocate tenacious pursuit of excellence in unusual areas - as a way to build both a more interesting life, and the opportunity to develop unique perspectives yielding real and lasting impact. In other words, you can sometimes go much further along the roads less traveled.
Thank you to the OSA Traveling Lecturer Program for providing this opportunity.

There is No Market for Nanophotonics — Part 2
In last month's OIDA newsletter, we described what nanophotonics was, and that it is a discipline, a set of enabling technologies, not a market. But there is a market for the things that nanophotonics does and this is true of other enabling photonics technologies as well. But what makes it so difficult and if these aren't markets, why do we assign values anyway?
