OSA would like to thank the Centennial Advisory Panel (CAP) for all of their guidance over the past two years in helping to make OSA’s 100th Anniversary year so successful. Without their dedication and commitment, none of it would have been possible. While 2016 may be over, many new programs created for the centennial will continue, benefiting our members and the optics & photonics community. Thank you to our committee members: Chris Dainty (Committee Chair) University College London, U.K.; Robert Byer (Committee Vice Chair), Stanford University, USA; Joseph Eberly (Committee Vice Chair), University of Rochester, USA; Stephen Fantone (Committee Vice Chair), Optikos Corp., USA; Connie Chang-Hasnain, University of Berkeley, USA; Armand Niederberger, LEIA, Inc., USA; Zuleykhan Tomova, University of Maryland, USA; Eric Van Stryland, CREOL, University of Central Florida, USA; Alan Willner, University of Southern California, USA; James Wyant, University of Arizona, USA.

Charles Godfrey Binder Professor of Engineering Science and Mechanics
The Pennsylvania State University
University Park, PA, USA
I had an amazing time visiting with the members of the joint OSA-SPIE Student Chapter at the Florida Institute of Technology. Mr. Greg Lovell, President of the chapter, and Professor Syed H. Murshid, Faculty Advisor of the chapter were wonderful hosts. During my talk, about 50 students and 10 faculty members were in the audience. Several questions were asked about my presentation (“About Birds and Bees”), in relation to physical mechanisms of biological color, bioreplication process for decoys of emerald ash borers, and the potential of artificial bugs for surveillance, telemetry, and rescue efforts. After the talk, I met with a group of students as well as individually five faculty members.
I strongly recommend that OSA Members interact with students interested in pursuing professional careers in optics and photonics. These interactions inspire students to continue with their studies. It also reinvigorates the lecturer, reminding him or her of the reasons they chose to pursue career is the most colorful areas of physics and engineering.
