OSA Addresses the US Immigration Ban
The Optical Society has joined 180+ other societies, groups and universities on a letter to President Trump outlining concern over the 27 January Executive Order on immigration. The order restricts the ability of scientists to enter the United States to study, attend a conference or to pursue research interests. The letter to President Trump urges the Administration to rescind the Executive Order and work in partnership with stakeholders to find a balanced approach to address national security and the need for scientific integrity. Margaret Murnane wins the Frederic Ives Medal/Jarus W. Quinn Prize
OSA is pleased to announce that Margaret Murnane, University of Colorado at Boulder, USA, has been selected as the 2017 recipient of the Frederic Ives Medal/Jarus W. Quinn Prize. Murnane earns this distinction for pioneering and sustained contributions to ultrafast science ranging from femtosecond lasers to soft x-ray high-harmonic generation to attosecond studies of atoms, molecules and surfaces.
Recognizing overall distinction in optics, the Frederic Ives Medal is the highest award of the Society. It was endowed in 1928 by Herbert E. Ives, a distinguished charter member and OSA President, 1924 and 1925, to honor his father who was noted as the inventor of modern photoengraving and for his pioneering contributions to color photography, three-color process printing, and other branches of applied optics.

OSA Traveling Lecturer Spotlight: Barry Sanders
In January 2017, I visited the two-year-old University of Engineering and Management located in Kolkata with Indrani Bhattacharya as my Faculty host. Typical of my visits to India, hospitality was excellent, beginning with being picked up at Kolkata airport and culminating in the warm interactions with faculty members and students plus, of course, the delicious food. A strong link exists between the venerable Institute of Engineering and Management and the nascent University of Engineering and Management. Students from both institutions were present. The Optical Society Student Chapter has the largest membership I have ever seen, and the students are enthusiastic about optics-related research and development.
In addition to meeting with undergraduate and graduate students, I spent the morning of 16 January at the opening of an “Inspire” (Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research) Camp, sponsored by India’s Department of Science and Technology. Admission to the Camp is restricted to the top 1% of West Bengal high school students and I had a chance to interact with them and enjoyed those discussions immensely. The opening session began with ceremonial watering of the tulsi plant (holy Indian basil) and talks by senior leadership of the University. I then gave the ninety-minute Inaugural Lecture on the topic of quantum information, specifically quantum computing and quantum cryptography, pitched at high-school level, which was challenging for me and I am sure challenged the high school students as well. In summary, I had a stimulating visit thanks to the Optical Society’s generous support for the Traveling Lecturer program.
