OSA Exhibits at the 2016 USA Science and Engineering Festival

On 15-17 April 2016, OSA participated in the 2016 USA Science and Engineering Festival. The bi-annual festival seeks to advance STEM education and inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers or in our case – OSA members. OSA partnered with sister societies under the name of Big Top Physics to help attendees learn more about the general field of physics. OSA featured its Centennial Exhibit and provided the Explore Optics Kit, where students learned about the Peppergram and a Light Paint Booth where attendees received a picture of their creation.

At the Centennial Booth, OSA staff quizzed students on general optics and photonics and handed out light-up yoyos and light-up balls. The booth garnered over 25,000 visitors.

OSA Traveling Lecturer Spotlight: Mike Fiddy

FiddyMike Fiddy, Professor, Optical Science and Electrical and Computer Engineering, Director of the NSF I/UCRC for Metamaterials,
The University of North Carolina at Charlotte

During my Traveling Lecturer experience, I got a chance to see leading edge research in optical metrology, organic photovoltaics and THz scattering at the Research Center in Optics -Centro de Investigaciones en Óptica AC (CIO), an impressive group of complex laboratories. I am pleased that the connections I made there will lead to future collaborations.

The chapter president, Monica Monserrat Martinez Garcia, and Jorge Sanchez Preciado were wonderful hosts and took the time to arrange visits to nearby Guanajuato as well as downtown Leon where CIO is located. Guanajuato is a beautiful city in Mexico and was declared a World Heritage City by UNESCO in 1988. It is spread over surrounding hills with cobbled streets and Baroque architecture. This traveling lecturer program provided a unique opportunity to learn, exchange ideas and meet new colleagues. It was also the perfect opportunity to promote OSA’s 100th Anniversary and the many events and publications tied to this special year. This was a memorable visit.

Enabled by Optics Corporate Winner to be Recognized at CLEO

OSA will recognize this year's corporate Enabled by Optics contest winner at the plenary keynote session during CLEO. In addition, corporate winner Consumer Physics will delve into SCiO via a panel demonstration during the conference on Wednesday, 8 June.

Consumer Physics' SCiO is a product that takes near-infrared spectroscopy and shrinks the system behind it from room-sized equipment to a hand-held sensor that integrates with smart phones. This molecular sensor then fits in the palm of your hand, offering insights on everything from what's in your lunch to what pills you're taking. "It's remarkable what Consumer Physics has done," said Dr. Gregory Quarles, Chief Scientist, The Optical Society. By finding a way to condense a full scanning system, spectroscopy applications increase exponentially. As materials are scanned and identified and the spectral image is recorded and stored, the use cases for this technology grow. It's what's exciting about optics: the possibility transcends the technology of today, providing solutions for tomorrow."

Conference registration information is available at cleoconference.org.

Takeaways from the Biophotonics Town Hall Forum in Florida

OIDA held its second town hall forum on the commercialization of biophotonics. The town hall addressed the challenges and opportunities in commercializing biophotonics, itself a worldwide market of about $54 billion annually, and the takeaways were more nuanced compared to the first OIDA town hall held last October. The forum was held at the OSA Biomedical Optics Congress, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA on 29 April.
