 OSA’s 100th anniversary serves as the catalyst for the “Light The Future Speaker Series” featuring visionaries, futurists, Nobel Prize winners and other luminaries in the field. The Light The Future Speaker Series’ second event was held at the OFC Conference last month in Anaheim, CA and featured Mary Lou Jepsen, Executive Director of Engineering, Facebook and moderator, Alan Willner, 2016 OSA President. Submission Deadline: 1 June
Join the “Write the Future” story contest and share your vision of optics and photonics. To enter, write a short fiction story in 300 – 500 words on the future of our field. The winner will receive a cash prize of $500 as well as a free trip and will be recognized at OSA’s 100th annual meeting, Frontiers in Optics, 17– 21 October in Rochester, New York, USA. In addition, the story will be published in OPN . All entries will receive an OSA100 commemorative gift.

University of Central Florida, College of Optics and Photonics Celebrates OSA’s 100
On Tuesday, 5 April, the student chapter at CREOL hosted a celebration for OSA’s Centennial with an evening event at their campus in Orlando. Eric Van Stryland, Past Dean of CREOL and Past-President of The Optical Society, presented on OSA’s Centennial activities around the world. Dr. Gregory Quarles, Chief Scientist, presented growth trends in the optics and photonics industry today and offered career guidance to the students and faculty in attendance.

OSA Fellow Stephen M. Pompea to Receive the 2016 Millikan Medal
The American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) has announced that Stephen M. Pompea, OSA Fellow will receive the Robert A. Millikan Medal this July at the AAPT 2016 Summer Meeting in Sacramento, California, USA. The award recognizes educators who have made invaluable and intellectually creative contributions to the teaching of physics. Dr. Pompea holds the rank of Observatory Scientist and leads the Department of Education and Public Outreach at the National Optical Astronomy Observatory in Tucson, Arizona. Dr. Pompea received his B.A. in Physics, Space Physics and Astronomy at Rice University, his M.A.T. in Physics at Colorado State University and a Ph.D. in Astronomy at the University of Arizona. OSA congratulates Dr. Pompea on this honor.

Past President, Fellow and Laser Technology Pioneer Elsa Garmire Retires and Reflects on her 21 Years at Dartmouth
Elsa Garmire, past president of OSA and OSA Fellow, has announced that she will retire from her position as Sydney E. Jenkins 1887 Professor of Engineering at Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH, USA. Garmire is considered a pioneer in the field of laser technology and is the author of over 250 journal papers, a holder of nine patents and has served on the board of five technical journals. As a board member on several advisory panels, Garmire has advised government policies for the Department of Energy, the United States Air Force, the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Academies’ Committee on Science, Engineering and Public Policy. OSA congratulates Elsa on all of her accomplishments and wishes her the best as she plans for retirement.

OSA was a proud sponsor of the 2016 Fitzpatrick Institute for Photonics Symposium, which took place at Duke University, USA on 14 -15 March. The event featured a keynote address from OSA Fellow and Nobel Laureate, William E. Moerner, Stanford University, USA, an introduction to the Centennial Celebration from Michael Duncan, OSA Senior Science Advisor and the Centennial Exhibit as well as distinguished lecturers who contributed papers and posters.

Congratulations to OSA Student Prize Winner
OSA congratulates Michael Lawrence G. Castanares, Australian National University, winner of the OSA student prize presented during the 2015 Australian and New Zealand Conference on Optics and Photonics/Annual Meeting of the Australian Optical Society. As the recipient of this prize, Castanares will receive a travel grant to attend an OSA meeting of his choice. The conference also featured an invited talk from OSA 2016 President Alan Willner titled “High-Capacity Free-Space Optical Communications Using Multiplexing of Multiple Orbital-Angular-Momentum Modes”.

During OSA’s Board approval to organize student chapters all over the world in the 1990’s, I was the Chair of the Member & Education Services Council and a Board Member. The objective was to nurture future OSA leaders from around the world. Decades later, as an active participant in the OSA Traveling Lecturer Program, I am glad to report that OSA’s vision is coming to fruition. Since then, I have been invited by student chapter leaders from the following countries; Latvia U; Sau Paulo U; India (NIT, VIT, IIT-Chennai); Warsaw U; UNCC, USA; INAOE, Mexico; Spain, ICFO & IONS. Most impressive are the students’ superb organizational skills and search for knowledge. I was invited to speak even though my recent research activities have been on out-of-box thinking. All my talks are presented in workshop-style and show appreciation for all major optical phenomena in a new way, especially as it relates to Non-Interaction of Waves (NIW). NIW is built into Huygens-Fresnel diffraction integral, the foundation of physical optics. The concept was explicitly postulated for the secondary wavelets by Huygens. These lectures have been summarized in my recent book, “Causal Physics: Photon Model by Non-Interaction of Waves”, CRC, 2014. Overall, I have enjoyed my experience as a lecturer, the students’ management of local institutional rules and their ability to connect to an international network of speakers provided by OSA.

To recognize teams who have made major contributions in optical engineering, OSA presents the Team Engineering Excellence Award. Named in honor of Paul F. Forman, the award recognizes technical achievements such as product engineering, process and software development and patent development. This award recognizes team achievement by members of the engineering community.
The 2016 award will be presented in Rochester, New York, during Frontiers in Optics 2016. Please contact the OSA Awards Office for more information and assistance in preparing a nomination (awards@osa.org or 1.202.416.1960). Nominations must be for teams.

On 19 February the U.S. Commerce Department's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) announced a competition for the formation of up to two Manufacturing Innovation Institutes to join the growing National Network for Manufacturing Innovation (NNMI). This competition will be the first NNMI solicitation in which proposals will be accepted on any advanced manufacturing topic.

The global photonics market declined in 2015 due to declines in displays and other large sectors, and in part from the strengthening of the dollar. OIDA foresees growth in 2016 as the cycle plays out.
Overall, the U.S. economy is growing at a modest but steady rate; but what about other sectors and regions?
