Consortium Selected for Photonics Manufacturing Institute
On July 27, U.S. Vice President Joe Biden officially announced that the New York consortium had been selected to lead the new Integrated Photonics Institute for Manufacturing Innovation (IP-IMI), which will be known as the American Institute for Manufacturing Integrated Photonics (AIM Photonics). The Research Foundation of the State University of New York is the consortium lead with the support of 75 partners and 49 additional consortia members. OSA is among the 49 consortium partners.
OSA would like to thank all of the volunteers who helped make a photonics institute possible, with a special thanks to Tom Baer and Alan Willner, the past and current chairs of the National Photonics Initiative (NPI).

Registration for IONS KOALA 2015, a premier International OSA Network of Students (IONS) conference held each year in Australia and New Zealand is now open and available online. The Optical Society is a proud sponsor of seven International IONS conferences in 2015. They are located in Germany, China, USA, Mexico, Tunisia, Spain and New Zealand. IONS conferences are organized for students, by students who are part of the most active chapters and feature technical programming, chapter management and cultural content. Seeking Nominations for the Herbert Walther Award – 1 September Deadline
Established by OSA and Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (DPG) in honor of Professor Herbert Walther, this award recognizes distinguished contributions in quantum optics and atomic physics as well as leadership in the international scientific community. Nominations for the 2016 award should be submitted to DPG by 1 September 2015. Contact Robert Labedzke in the DPG Office for more details.

OSA Member Reception in Nagoya, Japan
OSA President, Philip Russell will host an evening reception for OSA Members on Tuesday, September 15 at the Gajouen Restaurant in Nagoya, Japan. Please respond via email by 21 August if you plan to attend the reception. This event is held in conjunction with the Japan Society of Applied Physics Autumn Meeting which will take place 13 - 16 September 2015 at the Nagoya Congress Center. An OSA/JSAP Joint English-language Symposia will take place during the conference. Members are able to register for the conference at low JSAP member rates.

Help select OSA’s future leadership by voting in the OSA election for 2016 offices. The election for the 2016 OSA Vice President and three Directors at Large will continue through 25 September 2015, 23:59 U.S. Eastern Daylight Time. If you haven’t yet voted, please read the candidates’ profiles and personal statements, and then submit your vote. Every vote makes a difference!
Election results will be announced on Tuesday, 20 October 2015, at the OSA Annual Business Meeting during the 2015 Frontiers in Optics/OSA Annual Meeting in San Jose, CA, USA. Results will be available on the OSA website in late October.
*Individual, Emeritus and Recent Graduate members in good standing as of 1 September 2015 are eligible to vote in this election. Student and Youth Educator members are not eligible to vote.

Scientists and engineers have studied the brain for decades, yet many mysteries remain unsolved. New cross-disciplinary research is underway to develop and use cutting-edge technologies to better understand the brain and advance the frontiers of neuroscience. The National Science Foundation hosted a briefing July 9, 2015, on Capitol Hill co-sponsored by the Society of Neuroscience and The Optical Society. Panelists emphasized the importance of BRAIN funding in furthering their research and promoting collaborations that have led to significant progress in neuroscience advances. Representing The Optical Society was Dr. Spencer Smith, Assistant Professor Department of Cell Biology and Physiology, Neuroscience Center, Carolina Institute for Developmental Disabilities, UNC-Chapel Hill School of Medicine.
