Open Nominations: Volunteer for OSA Technical Group Leadership

OSA is recruiting leadership for several technical groups. We are looking for enthusiastic, self-motivated people to help raise the level of engagement within specific technical groups.

In this high profile position (as chair or advisor), candidates selected will have an excellent opportunity to make a positive impact in a specific scientific community and network with scientists with similar interests. If you would like to make an impact on your technical community consider applying to one of the technical groups that has a vacancy in leadership.

Please direct questions or concerns to the Technical Community Manager, Jasmine Pridgen, at jpridgen@osa.org or 202.416.1981.

A Successful OIDA 100G Workshop with Ethernet Alliance

OIDA and the Ethernet Alliance co-hosted a lively workshop on 100GbE single-wavelength technology on 12-13 June in San Jose, California, with over 130 attendees. The workshop focused on the technology of single channel 100 Gbps links, as opposed to discussions of different flavors of standards (although standards are always present somewhere in the discussion).

The optical communications industry has had it easy for all these years, getting by with simple NRZ (non-return-to-zero) signaling for nearly all the systems in use today. At the highest data rates, however, that is no longer sufficient.

The Workshop presentations are available to OIDA members.

Key Findings in OIDA’s New Manufacturing Report

OIDAOne outcome from OIDA’s 19 May meeting in Washington, DC was the OIDA report issued last month on photonics manufacturing. The report is the latest in a series published by OIDA , and the most comprehensive with regard to specific manufacturing costs.

A key point of the study is that the back-end assembly costs dominate the manufacturing costs. Here, “back-end” is meant to include everything but the clean room fabrication itself: packaging, test, reliability, and even interface and control electronics and design tools.

The front-end costs—capital equipment costs, ongoing operating costs, and the process development costs—are also formidable. The process development cost is the non-recurring engineering investment made to get the process to a commercial quality.  There is a wide misunderstanding that the process development cost is minor, although, for integrated photonics, it amounts to well beyond US$100 million.

OIDA members can download the report. For questions, contact Tom Hausken. Not an OIDA member? Contact Regan Pickett rpickett@osa.org, 1.202.416.1474 to learn about the benefits of membership.
