OSA Fellow Lecturer Program Grant Application Deadline 22 January
OSA Fellows are encouraged to apply for travel grants (up to $2,000) to visit and lecture in developing nations during 2014. The goal of this program is to foster optics programs by increasing interaction between OSA Fellows and optics communities in these areas. The next application deadline is 22 January 2014. Grants Available for Global Meetings
The OSA International Council is accepting proposals for co-sponsorship of 2014 meetings taking place in developing nations. Priority is given to new meetings/events, not regularly held meetings. The financial support is not intended to fully underwrite a meeting and should be used to directly support registrants and enable their participation. The next application deadline is 22 January 2014. More information is available on-line.

JOSA A and JOSA B Turn 30
This year the Journal of the Optical Society of America A (JOSA A) and the Journal of the Optical Society of America B (JOSA B) are celebrating their 30th anniversaries. In honor of the anniversary, OSA Publishing has created an anniversary website. It currently contains commemorative and historical editorials, and over the next few months, we will add the Journals’ most cited articles as well as mini review articles highlighting each Journal’s key topics areas.

NonImaging Online Silent Contest Viewer's Choice Portion to Open Soon
The NonImaging and Optical Design Technical Group recently closed the submission portion of their Online Silent Slide-Show Contest.
In addition to the judges selecting a winner, there will also be a Viewer’s Choice award. This portion of the contest will be open for voting by 24 January 2014 and will close on 14 February 2014. Please visit the site to review the finalists’ submissions and cast your vote!

OSA Incubator Meeting Featured on NPR
In December OSA held the "Spatially Precise Optogenetics at Depth Incubator Meeting." The goal of the meeting was to bring together experts from all disciplines in structured illumination, high-speed multi-photon imaging, optogenetic investigation of neural circuits and computational optical approaches. With a major goal of the Obama Administration’s BRAIN Initiative to comprehensively image and manipulate neural activity on a massive scale but with cellular resolution, participants of this meeting not only presented their recent advances, but also discussed the major outstanding challenges in this field and how to surmount these challenges to develop the necessary technologies that will unlock fundamental aspects of brain function and disease. Jon Hamilton, a reporter with the U.S. media outlet National Public Radio (NPR), attended the meeting and interviewed Incubator organizer Hillel Adesnik of the University of California Berkeley and Incubator presenter Elizabeth Hillman of Columbia University. Hillman and Adesnik spoke about the challenges faced in mapping the brain and ways that optics can help solve them. OIDA Co-Hosting SDN-Focused Workshop at OFC
 OIDA is co-hosting a workshop at OFC2014 with CIAN, and this year we will explore how well photonics can meet the promises of SDN—software defined networking. SDN is too easily used as the latest buzzword—the Next Big Thing to sweep the industry—but it has gathered some momentum. While the systems architects have grand visions for what it can do, there is also the reality of how the photonic gear actually operates. This workshop will look at the match (or mismatch, as the case may be) of the system vision vs. the reality. The data center offers a more controlled application of SDN, and so we will examine that application in particular. OIDA and CIAN examined data center photonics in two previous workshops at OFC. The upcoming workshop will be on Sunday, 9 March 2014 in San Francisco, CA, USA.

OIDA Panel Discussion on Optical Communication Roadmapping
Join OIDA at a panel discussion on optical communication roadmapping on the OFC show floor. OIDA, standards bodies, and others have worked for years on various photonics roadmaps, applied toward different applications. In fact, there is a long history of roadmapping in optical communications, more so than in most other photonics segments. OIDA has invited speakers to address roadmaps from MIT, iNEMI, ITRS, and the standards bodies, and we will lead a discussion about where these efforts are leading. This OFC session is intended to be informational, but it will also help the National Photonics Initiative (NPI) effort, and the session will include an update on the NPI. The show floor session will be on Tuesday, 11 March 2014 from 11:00-12:45.

OIDA at the Laser Focus World Marketplace
Look for OIDA at the Laser Focus World Marketplace Seminar this year. Tom Hausken will make a market presentation on passive optics. The passives products are well known to visitors of the major exhibitions, but the segment is poorly characterized by market analysts. This is in part because the products are perceived as the “nuts and bolts” of the industry, commodities lacking the sex appeal of hotter technologies. Also, the supply has been fragmented among many “mom and pop” vendors, making it difficult to gather information. To our knowledge, OIDA has gathered the only information of this kind in the industry. OIDA is also sponsoring the reception for the Laser Focus event, which will be at the Marriot Marquis in San Francisco on Monday, 3 February 2014, colocated with Photonics West.

Xi-Cheng Zhang Becomes New Editor-in-Chief of Optics Letters
OSA Publishing welcomes Xi-Cheng Zhang as the new Editor-in-Chief of Optics Letters. Zhang is the Director of the Rochester Institute of Optics and the M. Parker Givens Professor of Optics at the University of Rochester. He is an OSA Fellow and Director-at-Large on the OSA Board of Directors. Govind Agrawal Assumes Role of Advances in Optics and Photonics (AOP) Editor-in-Chief
OSA Publishing welcomes Govind Agrawal as the new Editor-in-Chief of AOP. Agrawal is a Professor of Optics and a Professor of Physics at the University of Rochester. He is an OSA Fellow, served on the OSA Board of Directors, and chaired the OSA Publications Council in 2009 and 2010. He has also served on the editorial boards for AOP, Optics Express, and the Journal of Optical Society of America B.
