CLEO: 2014 Invited and Tutorial Speakers Announced
View the esteemed line-up of newly announced invited and tutorial speakers who will present research on the latest advancements and emerging technologies in lasers and electro-optics.
CLEO: 2014 is also accepting cutting-edge research during the Call for Papers. Well-known for its rigorous peer-reviewed technical program, CLEO: 2014 covers the full spectrum from basic laser science to photonic applications.

Submit to the Maiman Student Paper Competition
Are you looking to submit a paper for CLEO:2014? When submitting, don’t forget to check “YES” to be considered for the Maiman Student Paper Competition! The Maiman Student Paper Competition was established in 2008 in memory of Theodore Maiman and recognizes student innovation, research excellence and presentation skills in the areas of laser technology and electro-optics, and is endowed by HRL Laboratories, LLC, IEEE Photonics Society and APS Division of Laser Science. The finalists will present their papers to a panel of judges in a private session during the conference. The top prize winner receives USD 3,000, and two honorable mention recipients each receive a certificate. Be an OSA Congressional Fellow—Help Shape Federal Science Policy!
Looking for a way to combine your interest in public policy with your science background? Become an OSA Congressional Fellow! The program is a unique opportunity for scientists and engineers to gain experience in public policy and help influence decision makers. Congressional Fellows spend one year on Capitol Hill working as special legislative assistants on the staff of a Member of Congress, Senator, or Congressional Committee.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. by 1 September 2014 to be eligible; mid- and late-career applicants are encouraged to apply as well. A competitive salary and a health insurance/travel stipend are provided. More information on the fellowship, including how to apply, can be found on OSA’s website. Deadline for applications is Friday, 3 January 2014.

OSA Fellow Lecturer Program Grants Available
OSA Fellows are encouraged to apply for travel grants (up to USD 2,000) to visit and lecture in developing nations during 2014. The goal of this program is to foster optics programs by increasing interaction between OSA Fellows and optics communities in these areas. The next application deadline is 20 January 2014. OSA Hosts Symposium in Conjunction with LASER World of PHOTONICS in Mumbai
OSA and the organizers of the LASER World of PHOTONICS India partnered to host a symposium on Advances in Light Matter Interaction – From Ultra-high Power to Ultrafast to Ultrasmall held in conjunction with the LASER World of PHOTONICS India exhibition on 12 November 2013 in Mumbai, India. The session was organized by Yehiam Prior (Weizmann Institute, Israel) and Bishnu Pal (IIT, Delhi) and featured presentations from: Sir David Payne, Southampton University, UK; Stefan Nolte, Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena, Germany; Eric Mazur, Harvard University, USA; Ajoy Kar, Heriot-Watt University, UK; M. Krishnamurthy, TIFT Mumbai, India; and Ashish Nath, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, India. The symposium highlighted OSA’s ability to bring together strong technical programming world-wide.

Apply for Meeting Sponsorship
The OSA International Council is accepting proposals for cosponsorship of 2014 meetings taking place in developing nations. Priority is given to new meetings/events, rather than regularly held meetings. The financial support is not intended to fully underwrite a meeting and should be used to directly support registrants and enable their participation. The next application deadline is 20 January 2014. More information is available at OSA.org.

OSA in Shanghai & Beijing
Deputy Executive Director and Chief Publishing Officer Elizabeth Nolan visited the offices of Chinese Laser Press at the Shanghai Institute of Optics & Fine Mechanics to discuss the newly launched Photonics Research journal in early November. She was joined the following week in Beijing by OSA 2013 President Donna Strickland and Director of Research & Program Development Kristin Mirabal to meet with several OSA Student Chapters and partnering organizations, and to attend the Asia Communications and Photonics Conference (ACP). OSA Student Chapter members from Peking University, Institute of Physics; Beijing University of Post and Telecommunications (BUPT) and Nankai University presented their outreach programs and chapter activities and President Strickland presented technical talks as well as information about the various resources available to OSA student members. The ACP Conference meets annually and is one of the largest technical conferences in Asia. OSA is pleased to have managed the 2013 submissions and international registration and worked with the local organizing committee from BUPT.
