OSA Publishing Announces New Author Submission Website: “Prism”Prism is OSA's new article tracking system offering users an easy-to-navigate interface and time saving features. When fully implemented, Prism will include customized modules for authors, reviewers, and editors and will replace OSA's current All-Digital-System (ADS) for peer review and journal production. The author module of Prism launches today as phase 1 of the upgrade project. The reviewer and editor modules will be fully updated in phases 2 and 3 later this year. In the interim, OSA's reviewers and editors will continue using the current ADS system. Learn more.[top] |
New: “Cited By” Email Alerts for OSA Journal ArticlesOSA has recently launched the capability for individuals to track citations to an individual article. To use this new feature, browse an “Enhanced HTML” version of an article (example article) and simply click on the “Cited By” tab. Once in the “Cited By” tab, click on the “Alert me when this paper is cited” link to set up a “Cited By” alert. You will need to sign up for, or log into, your OSA account to do so (setting up an OSA account is easy to do by just answering a few quick questions).[top] |
Preview the OSA Centennial History BookOSA, led by volunteer Paul Kelley, is preparing a book celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Society in 2016. It will capture the history of The Optical Society in the context of the evolution of optics research and the optics industry as well as changes in the nature of the science and technology enterprise and, even more broadly, changes in the United States and the world. The book will include profiles of OSA leaders, optics companies, and optics research in academia, industry, and government. March’s OSA Members in the News: Paul Corkum and Ferenc KrauszOSA fellows Paul Corkum and Ferenc Krausz have been jointly recognized with the 2013 King Faisal Science Prize for their work on attosecond photonics. Corkum is currently Research Chair at NRC-uOttawa Joint Attosecond Science Laboratory and Director of Attosecond Science at the Steacie Institute for Molecular Science in Ottowa. Krausz is a professor at Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, and Director of the Laboratory for Attosecond Physics at the Max-Planck-Institute of Quantum Optics, Garching, Germany. The $200,000 prize, funded by the King Faisal Foundation of Saudi Arabia, cited, "The prize-winners are recognized for their independent pioneering work which has made it possible to capture the incredibly fast motion of electrons in atoms and molecules in a 'movie' with a time resolution down to attoseconds."Read about more OSA members or submit news about yourself or other OSA members online. Apply for The Optical Society's Financial Co-sponsorship of Meetings in Developing NationsThe OSA International Council has allocated funds for investing in the global optics community by supporting international meetings. OSA will consider requests for cooperation with, or co-sponsorship of, meetings and review requests for financial sponsorship. To be eligible for financial support, the meeting must be held in a developing country and approved by the OSA Board of Meetings. Student Recognized at Optical Society of Korea MeetingThe Optical Society of Korea’s (OSK) Winter Annual Meeting was held February 2013 in Deajeon, Korea. OSA Vice-President Philip Russell delivered a plenary talk titled “Novel Light-Matter Interactions in Glass Fibre Microstructures.” Jong-ryul Choi of the Yonsei University was awarded the OSA-OSK Student Travel Prize for his paper “In Situ Fluorescence Optical Detection Using a Digital Micromirror Device (DMD) for 3D Cell-based Assays.” Russell also had the opportunity to meet with students from KAIST and tour their labs.[top] |
CIOMP/OSA Summer School Student Travel Grants AvailableA limited number of travel grants will be supported by CIOMP for the use of students attending the summer session from outside of China. Students must submit an application for acceptance and indicate in a separate letter their need for travel funds. Funds will be limited to cover only airfare from the student’s home city to Changchun and back not to exceed USD $2,000. Students will still be required to pay the USD $450 registration fee which includes accommodations, meals and registration materials.The 2013 CIOMP-OSA Summer Session on Optical Engineering, Design and Manufacturing will be held 4-9 August in Changchun, China. The week-long program will provide a wonderful opportunity for students to further their education and interact with instructors, local professors and fellow students. OP-TEC Releases New Precision Optics Technician Skill StandardsOn 28 February, OP-TEC announced the official release of The National Precision Optics Skill Standards for Technicians, 2nd Edition (OP-TEC/UCF, 2013). These skill standards represent the consensus of a broad cross-section of U.S. employers regarding the technical and workplace skills required of precision optics technicians. They are designed to give educators and employer advisory committees a solid foundation for generating courses and programs that will enable two-year colleges (and their feeder high schools) to produce globally competitive workers. The standards have been endorsed by the American Precision Optics Manufacturers Association, Colorado Photonics Industry Association, Florida Photonics Cluster, New Mexico Optics Industry Association, and the Rochester (New York) Regional Photonics Cluster. Significant advances in the development of optical techniques have led to an ever increasing role of optics in the study of and treatment of various problems in the life sciences ranging from molecular level investigations to clinical treatment of patients.
