OSA Awards Recognizing Achievements in Optical Engineering
Recognizing excellence and achievement in the optics and photonics community is one of the fundamental responsibilities of The Optical Society and its members. OSA sponsors over 20 awards and medals that acknowledge a broad array of contributions and achievements, including three that recognize excellence in optical engineering.
The Paul F. Forman Engineering Excellence Award recognizes team technical achievements in optical engineering. The deadline for nominations for the 2013 Award is 2 July.
The Joseph Fraunhofer Award/Robert M. Burley Prize focuses on research accomplishments in the field of optical engineering and the David Richardson Medal emphasizes contributions to optical engineering, primarily in the commercial and industrial sector. Nominations for these awards are due by 1 October 2013.

May’s OSA Member in the News: Federico Capasso
The European Physical Society has named OSA Fellow Federico Capasso the winner of the 2013 Prize for Applied Aspects of Quantum Electronics and Optics "for seminal contributions to the invention and demonstration of the quantum cascade laser.” The prize is awarded once every two years and recognizes achievements in applied and fundamental research in optical physics. The award was presented to Capasso, professor at the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Harvard University, USA, in a special plenary ceremony on 14 May 2013 during the Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe (CLEO/Europe) and the International Quantum Electronics Conference (IQEC), held during the World of Photonics Congress in Munich, Germany.

Featured Corporate Member: The Light Brigade

The center will provide students with access to a wide variety of fiber optics-related training material and will allow ITE students to learn from experts and acquire skills relevant to the fiber optics industry. The Light Brigade will offer training expertise, consultancy services and course material for ITE to ensure the program addresses the latest technology and techniques. The first of several planned training courses supports the Fiber to the Home Council’s Certified Fiber-to-the-Home Professional (CFHP) program. Upon completion of the ITE training program, students will have the necessary knowledge and practical experience to successfully complete the CFHP certification exam.

OSA Congratulates
OSA congratulates The Australian Optical Society (AOS) on its 30th Anniversary. AOS was formed in May 1983 as a non-profit organization for the advancement of optics in Australia. OSA members will soon be able to join AOS when establishing or renewing their OSA membership.
OSA also congratulates The Spanish Optical Society (SEDOPTICA) on its 45th Anniversary. SEDOPTICA was founded in March of 1968 to promote the development of Optics and the investigation and industrial applications of its different branches. OSA has a co-marketed membership agreement in place with SEDOPTICA, which provides OSA members the opportunity to join SEDOPTICA when establishing or renewing their OSA membership.
