Modern Optics Metrology Challenges Driven by Consumer Electronics (AR/VR/MR) and Automotive (ADAS) Technologies

It is now well-known that part of the optical manufacturing market is driven by consumer electronics such as smartphones, augmented/virtual reality (AR/VR) devices and automated driving (ADAS). Though at first integrated optics were simple, current imaging optics are challenging in terms of design, manufacturing, and thence metrology. For instance, space constraints lead to much more compact optical systems which implies reduced back focal length and enlarged chief ray angles. The optical path geometrics may also not be straight any more. Windshield cameras require high quality polishing to ensure driver assistance camera image sharpness. Finally, cheaper plastic optics are more and more widely used but may cause undesired birefrigence effects. All these constraints induce new metrology challenges.

Metrology tools must be compatible with such demanding optical systems. However, standard interferometers and MTF benches are no longer powerful enough to answer the market needs for high wavefront error dynamic range or complex measurement interpretation. Wavefront sensing has the answer and is already successfully applied where other technologies reach their limit.

In this presentation, we will discuss current challenges encountered in modern optics metrology laboratories. Through several concrete examples, we will show how wavefront sensing meets the dream of optical designers and manufacturers and unleashes their creativity.
