Setting Up Your Own Lab Virtual Panel Discussion
This webinar is hosted By: Polarization Management and Propagation Technical Group
19 November 2024 8:30 - 10:00
Eastern Time (US & Canada) (UTC -05:00)You are invited to join the Polarization Management and Propagation Technical Group for a virtual panel discussion that will explore setting up your own lab. Our panelists will include Ritwick Das, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi; Angela Dudley, University of the Witwatersrand; and Graham Gibson, University of Glasgow.
Our panelists will start by sharing their experiences with setting up their own labs in different parts of the world. They’ll also discuss best practices, how much seed funding is available from the institute, how to apply for funding, and how to order lab equipment. This will be a great opportunity for final-year PhD students and postdocs to learn from our panelists’ recent experience and ask questions as they get ready to establish their own labs in the near future.
About Our Speakers
Ritwick Das
Indian Institute of Technology Delhi
Dr. Ritwick Das is an Associate Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, India and is the head of the Lasers and Nonlinear Photonics group. He did M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Physics from IIT Delhi in 2004 and 2008, respectively. He was a postdoctoral researcher at ICFO-The Institute of Photonic Sciences, Barcelona, Spain during 2008-2010. He joined the National Institute of Science Education and Research, Bhubaneswar, India as an Assistant Professor in 2010, where he worked till 2023 as Reader-F and Associate Professor. His research interest include non-linear optics, topological photonics and plasmonics. Presently, he is a senior member of Optica.
Angela Dudley
University of the Witwatersrand
Dr. Angela Dudley is a Senior Lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. After receiving her M.Sc. in Physics from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Angela joined the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) at the National Laser Centre on a Ph.D. studentship in 2008. Her Ph.D. research involved measurement techniques for optical fields carrying orbital angular momentum. She received her Ph.D. in 2012 and subsequently commenced a Postdoctoral Fellowship followed by a Senior Researcher position at the CSIR. After 10 years at the CSIR, Angela joined the University of the Witwatersrand where she is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Physics department and a research group member of the Structured Light Lab. Angela’s particular research interests lie in developing novel generation and diagnostic approaches for structured light over a range of powers and wavelengths. Her research has resulted in 35 peer-reviewed journal articles, more than 35 international conference proceedings and 2 international patent. Angela was selected as Optica Fellow in 2024.
Graham Gibson
University of Glasgow
Dr. Graham Gibson is a Research Fellow in the Optics Group, School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Glasgow. He did his Ph.D. in tunable lasers from the University of St Andrews, and his research interests have included orbital angular momentum, detection and imaging of hydrocarbon gases and novel imaging systems using single-pixel detectors. He also plays a central role in QuantIC, the UKs quantum technology hub in imaging where he has designed and built many of their technology demonstrator systems.
