Navigating Project Leadership

What does it take to navigate a project successfully? In this session we will discuss the various phases of a project, the related tasks, and the challenges project leaders may have to face and overcome during each phase. Elaborating on standard methodological frameworks we will explore the various responsibilities and roles of a project leader, as well as the required skills. The talk will offer participants interested in project management a valuable perspective on the holistic nature of this position and what is needed to excel in it.

About the Speaker

Richard Zeltner received his master’s degree in integrated Life Science from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany. During this interdisciplinary program, he came in contact with biophotonics, which sparked an interest in the broader field of optics and photonics. He joined the division of Prof. Gerd Leuchs at the Max-Planck-Institute for the Science of Light in Erlangen (MPL) in 2013 to work on his master’s thesis on optical sensing. For his PhD he joined Prof. Philip St.J. Russell at MPL, where he worked on sensors based on optically propelled particles inside hollow-core photonic crystal fibers.

In spring 2019 he joined Menlo Systems GmbH, a leading supplier and developer of laser systems for quantum technologies and precision metrology, for a project management and business development position. Since spring of 2023, Richard has been an R&D group leader in charge of R&D activities on optical clocks and photonic integrated circuitry.

Richard was the chair of the European Physical Societies’ (EPS) Young Minds Programme from 2020 to 2022, and received the 2024 EPS Achievement Award, recognizing his contribution to the development of the society.  In 2022 he was recognized as an Optica Ambassador.
