Patents and Intellectual Property 101

Technology companies and institutions at all stages face a variety of intellectual property issues. We will introduce important forms of intellectual property, including patents, trade secrets, and trademarks, and discuss the role each plays in an intellectual property portfolio.

About the Speaker

Payal Patel is the Senior Division IP Counsel at Corning Incorporated, where she handles a full range of intellectual property matters for its mobile consumer electronics division. A trusted legal advisor to executive management, in both commercial and intellectual property matters, Payal is known for creatively leveraging IP, technology, and licensing to accelerate Corning’s commercial growth through its innovations.

With 20 years in the legal field, Payal’s expertise extends to negotiating commercial and IP agreements, mitigating risk to commercialization, managing large patent portfolios, and as a registered patent attorney, obtaining numerous patents that have been pivotal for Corning’s global success in both the mobile consumer electronics and automotive industries. 

Prior to Corning, Payal served as Intellectual Property Counsel at Berry Plastics Group, Inc. and as Patent Counsel at Servilla Whitney LLC, an IP law firm where she supported several Fortune 200 companies.  In addition to her legal leadership, Payal currently serves on the non-profit boards of the United Way Southern Tier and Southern Finger Lakes Pride.

Payal graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering, and a Juris Doctorate from Seton Hall Law School.
