About the Speaker

2017 Ambassador Arlene Smith is a seasoned Program Manager with a strong foundation in optics and photonics. She holds a Ph.D. in Experimental Physics (Optics) from the University of Galway, Ireland,  and has extensive experience in leading and managing complex engineering projects across various industries, including telecommunications, medical devices, and industrial lasers.

Arlene has held positions as a Product Engineer and Program Manager at leading technology companies. Her expertise encompasses new product development, project management, and cross-functional team leadership.

Arlene has been actively involved in Optica (formerly OSA) since 2007. She has served as Chair of the Membership Engagement & Development Council and the OPN Editorial Advisory Committee, as a member of the Board of Directors, and as Program Chair for the Applied Industrial Optics Topical Meeting. She is currently Chair of the Nominating Council. She has also contributed to various Optica initiatives, including the Traveling Lecturer Program and the Student Chapter program.

Arlene is passionate about fostering professional development within the optics and photonics community and is committed to advancing the field through collaboration and innovation.
