Optica Incubator on Petahertz Electronics

Optica Incubator on Petahertz Electronics

12 - 14 November 2025
Optica Global Headquarters, Washington, DC, USA

Hosts

  • P. Donnie Keathley, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA
  • Christian Heide, University of Central Florida, USA
  • Matthias Kling, Stanford University, USA

Program Overview

Petahertz electronics are electronic devices and systems where the electric field of light is used to directly drive currents at optical frequencies. They are currently enabling new methods for field-resolved optical detection and current generation with sub-femtosecond resolution. There is interest in determining how they might enable new methods for breaking through frequency limitations encountered with conventional electronics or enable new capabilities for emerging fields such as quantum computing and quantum information science.

Scope and Goals

This incubator will bring leaders in the emerging field of petahertz electronics together with experts in adjacent areas such as high-speed electronics, ultrafast sources and optics, integrated photonics, and quantum information science and technology. Through invited talks, moderated discussions, and breakout sessions, attendees will:

  • Review the current state of petahertz electronics with a focus on emerging materials, systems, and methods essential to the ongoing development of petahertz electronic devices;
  • Discuss how petahertz electronics might be incorporated into existing integrated photonic and electronic platforms and how they could have an impact on these systems in the near term;
  • Develop a roadmap for petahertz electronics that considers near-term (2-5 years) and far-term (5-10 years) goals.

There is a growing sense that the ultrafast and sub-cycle nature of the optical response could allow for new methods in quantum sciences and technologies. The incubator will explore this as well as the connections to other developing areas, such as coherent control of electron dynamics in materials, topological electronics, and valleytronics.

Input from individuals in adjacent communities will be particularly important to ensuring the roadmap captures opportunities for collaboration, the capabilities that they would hope to see petahertz electronics enable, what their work could enable in the development of PHz electronics, and identifying the greatest opportunities for impact.
