Michael K Barnoski earned his PhD in physics from Cornell University, USA. Upon completion of this degree, Barnoski joined Hughes Research Laboratories in 1969. He stayed there for 10 years, at which time he joined TRW where he developed the Technology Research Center there. In 1983, he became a consultant to Corning and co-founded PlessCor Optronics. In 1990, he became a consultant at Polaroid and other companies under Barnoski Inc. In 2002, he founded nanoPrecision Products Inc. where he served as  President and CEO.

He was a Fellow of the Society and recipient of the John Tyndall Award “in recognition of his invention of devices and instruments fundamental to fiber optic technology, and the leadership that he has exerted both in professional societies and in industry in advancing optical communication technology.”
