James M. Burch

James M. Burch completed his master's degree at Oriel College and received a PhD from the University of Bristol in 1952. Except for a year as visiting professor at Rochester's Institute of Optics, Burch spent his 31-year research career at Britain's National Physical Laboratory, where he became deputy chief scientific officer and was a research leader on optical methods for three-axis measurement and deformation. He was a Fellow of OSA and recipient of the 1988 Joseph Fraunhofer Award. He was recognized “for pioneering work in all areas of modern optical design and testing, as well as a special understanding of the behavior of light in physical systems and the application of that knowledge to practical engineering purposes.”
