Awards & Distinctions

M. David Egger obtained his PhD in experimental psychology from Yale University in 1962. He served on the faculty of the Yale Medical School and was professor and vice chairman, Department of Neuroscience & Cell Biology, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School at Rutgers. In the fruit fly, Egger and his colleagues have invesigated genes influencing the organization of nerve cell intercommunication via chemical transmission and by direct electrical coupling (gap junctions). In the rat and mouse, they have studied the expression of proteins and genes related to growth factor receptors influencing growth, survival and patterning of sensory nerve fibers. Using mathematical and computer techniques, Egger's group has formulated biologically informed models for growth and morphology of nerve cells.

In 2000, he received the R. W. Wood Prize “for seminal contributions to confocal microscopy.”
