Powering through the Curve
Buddy Bayer, Windstream
This presentation will provide the ongoing story of a company’s transformation into a next generation solution provider. Innovative culture, organizational evolution, big data analytics, automation, and software-defined products are some of the key areas we will explore. It’s a story that connects people and empowers business in a world of infinite possibilities.
Panel 1: Action in the Access Network
The desire to support high-speed residential and business services as well as prepare for 5G fronthaul and backhaul has operators reexamining their access network strategies. Traditional telcos are moving to 10G PON and deciding between XGS-PON and NG-PON2. Cable operators are juggling 10G-EPON, fiber deep DOCSIS 3.1/Full Duplex, and Distributed Access Architecture schemes. Both camps also are evaluating the potential role of fixed wireless as an alternative to wired links. This panel will illuminate a turbulent network segment and offer insight into the factors that will determine technology choices.
Moderator: Stephen Hardy, Lightwave
Speakers:
Curtis Knittle, CableLabs
Lucy Lombardi, Telecom Italia
Toby Redshaw, Verizon
Sachin Vasudeva, Calix
Panel 2: Views from the APAC Region
Asia-Pacific (APAC) region has been the 'hot' area of optical infrastructure investment over the past 3 years outpacing the rest of the world to move from 41% of global spending in 2015 to over 48% in 2017. This session will explore some of the drivers behind this growth and focus in on key initiatives in the region that will continue to propel this market in 2019 and beyond.
Moderator: Heidi Adams, IHS Markit
Speakers:
Sun Min, Tencent
Ankit Agarwal, Sterlite Technologies
Lee Young Wuk, KT
Panel 3: The Path to 400G and Beyond
Data center expansion has been a major driver of innovation and investment across all areas of the optical transport ecosystem. Will this continue, and for how long? This session will explore plans for the next upgrade cycle in the data center networking infrastructure. It will discuss diverging paths towards 400GbE connectivity in mega datacenters, including issues with product availability, and progress in 100G lambda optics and PAM4 DSPs. It will also address new solutions for high speed DCI connections, such as 400ZR, and their impact on the optical transport ecosystem.
Moderator: Shamim Akhtar, Apple
Speakers:
Wenhua Lin, Intel Corporation
Vijay Vusirikala, Google
Tom Williams, Acacia Communications
Martin Zirngibl, Finisar Corporation
Panel 4: Commercial QKD & Encryption
Public key cryptography algorithms currently in use would become insecure if a general-purpose quantum computer can be built that can run Shor’s algorithm on a 2048-bit integer. Quantum key distribution protocols offer an alternative to algorithmic cryptography. They can establish session keys across distances of hundreds of kilometers, relying on quantum physics to reveal eavesdropping if it occurs, rather than on cryptographic assumptions for security. While the data rates are currently very low for conventional links, quantum key distribution (QKD) has been demonstrated across optical transport, DCI, optical access and even in free space optics from earth to orbiting satellites and back. Post-quantum encryption offers another alternative by seeking algorithms that are secure against even quantum computers. This session will bring experts from research and commercial vendors to discuss the maturity of quantum communications technology deployed on the the current fiber infrastructure.
Moderator: Vladimir Kozlov, LightCounting
Speakers:
Lily Chen, NIST
Jörg-Peter Elbers, ADVA Optical Networking
Michele Mosca, Institute for Quantum Computing, University of Waterloo
John Prisco, Quantum Xchange
